What to expect during your EnerGuide home evaluation?
An EnerGuide home evaluation, conducted by our certified advisors Cameron or Parul takes about 2.5 hours and helps you understand and improve your home’s energy efficiency.
Before Your Evaluation
Avoid using wood-burning or solid-fuel appliances 24 hours before the evaluation.
Tip: Make sure to clean out your fireplace thoroughly—unless you want your home looking like a scene from a volcanic eruption during the blower door test. Trust us, nobody likes ashes everywhere!
During Your Evaluation
- The evaluation begins with an exterior inspection of your home. Photos of your home’s exterior, mechanical systems, attic, and any wood-burning appliances will be taken for quality assurance and record-keeping, in compliance with privacy laws.
- The advisor will assess insulation, windows, doors, HVAC systems, and ventilation equipment. For safety, please turn down or off any fuel-fired systems during the evaluation; they will be reset afterward.
- Blower Door Test: This test measures your home’s airtightness, identifying leaks and areas for improvement.
Post-Evaluation
- Your advisor will review the collected data and calculate your home’s EnerGuide rating.
- We will discuss energy efficiency plans and rebates programs together.
- Keep relevant invoices for energy upgrades ready if required for rebate programs.
Preparing Your Home for the Evaluation
Ensure the following conditions are met:
- Access: Clear paths to all attic spaces, crawl spaces, mechanical equipment, and other hard-to-reach areas.
- Heating: Your home must have a space heating system in place.
- Windows and Doors: All windows and doors must be in place and properly sealed. A maximum of one window or door may be missing if temporarily covered and air-sealed.
- Envelope: The building envelope, including roofs, walls, floors, windows, and doors, must be intact. Ongoing renovations should not breach the envelope.
- Foundation: Your home must rest on its permanent foundation or be a permanently moored float home.
- Power: The blower door test requires a standard AC electrical power supply. If unavailable, arrange for an alternative power supply and inform us.
- Wood-burning Appliances: Remove ashes from wood-burning appliances before the blower door test.
On the Day of Your Evaluation
- Your advisor will explain the evaluation’s scope, duration, and data collection methods.
- The evaluation starts outside and then moves indoors.
- Afterward, your advisor will review the data and discuss relevant programs.
